The Pathway out of Macroeconomic Crisis to Long-term Prosperity in Malawi

Project Dates

July 2021–June 2023

Supported By

Centre for Development and Enterprise

The Growth Lab conducted independent applied research on Malawi’s macroeconomic crisis and pathways to sustained, inclusive growth. The project diagnosed the binding constraints behind Malawi’s foreign exchange shortages, high inflation, domestic debt pressures, and weak export performance, and developed practical reform options to restore macroeconomic stability, mobilize productive investment, and unlock new drivers of growth. The research aimed to inform a homegrown policy agenda that could help Malawi move from crisis management toward broader economic transformation.
