Bolivia descended into severe economic turmoil in 2023–24, when structural imbalances that had built up over many years turned into an open and widely felt crisis. In response, the Growth Lab launched a 15-month applied research project to analyze Bolivia’s key economic challenges and explore ways to steer the country back toward inclusive economic prosperity.

Our project had three main objectives:

  • To better understand the underlying drivers and dynamics of the crisis
  • To identify priority reforms to stabilize the macroeconomy in the short term
  • To propose measures to unlock productive potential in strategic sectors such as hydrocarbons and energy, mining, lithium, agriculture, and tourism over the medium term.

Most importantly, the project aimed to contribute to the national economic policy debate by sharing its findings broadly with policymakers, business leaders, economic experts, and the wider public.

This work has resulted in seven thematic policy reports, which were published on April 23, 2026.
